Fluency is often thought of as an ability to speak fast. However, pace is only a part of fluency. Here are several other aspects that are important when it comes to speaking. Some of them are clarity, coherence, intonation, tone and volume.
What one speaks should be comprehensive. If it’s not easy to understand, the purpose wouldn’t be met. Speaking fast is not important in anyway. Imagine a foreigner learning your mother tongue and attempting to speak it fast. I am sure it would be hard to understand but if people from your hometown or your country speak fast in that language, you can understand. We have to apply the same logic to English as it is a foreign language to us. So, whenever you deliver a presentation or explain something, don’t speak as fast as you speak your mother tongue. Slow down a little.
One of my students who was a chemical engineer was crazy about excelling in language and communication. When he observed an American deliver an excellent presentation, he approached him and asked how does he deliver such presentations. The American’s reply was “I think if my grandmother would understand my presentation. That helps keep it simple and easy to understand.” I am sure such a thought reflects on the rate of speech as well.
Stop chasing speaking fast. Working on clarity would help you achieve the desired outcome when you speak.
Life is immensely beautiful😊
